Great idea for getting the word out by Martha Acquisto from Torrence Creek!

I run the morning broadcast on the news at Torrence Creek . We, (my crew and I) showed the posters to the staff, went over the posters and asked every teacher to post it in their classrooms and we are talking about them EVERY day!!! My teachers love them!

During Planning:

1. Get teachers talking about the practices
- The K-2 planning guides have a place for teachers to begin discussing the practices as related to each Investigations Unit.
- Focus on one practice during planning each week. Have teachers read the practice, then record on a post-it what the practice means "in a nutshell". Continue to have teams of teachers add post-its.
2. Make sure teachers understand that we're building mathematically proficient students
The Pratices are for STUDENTS - not Teachers right? Yes, but teachers have the responsibility of creating mathematically proficient students. One way to think about this is to formulate each practice as a question. During planning, teachers can discuss how they are making this happen in their classroom.
  1. How do I encourage students to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them?
  2. How do I encourage students to reason abstractly and quantitatively?
  3. How do I encourage students to construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others?
  4. How do I encourage students to model with mathematics?
  5. How do I encourage students to use appropriate tools strategically?
  6. How do I encourage students to attend to precision?
  7. How do I encourage students to encourage and make use of structure?
  8. How do I encourage students to look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning?

QUESTIONS TO ASK THAT MOVE STUDENTS TO BECOME MATHEMATICALLY PROFICIENT

  • Could you try this with simpler numbers? Fewer numbers?

3 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

7 Look for and make use of structure.
  • How do you know your rule/equation will always work?
8 Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
